PISA 2011 : Indian students results were disappointing
The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a system of international assessments that focuses on Fifteen-year-old child capabilities in reading literacy, mathematics literacy, science literacy and general awareness. The PISA 2009 plus programme was held by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) where India takes part for the first time as an additional participant. The International Evaluation test by two small paragraphs “how to brush your teeth quoting an expert on tooth brushing” where only 53% students from Himachal Pradesh and 63% from Tamil Nadu were able to answer correctly. This International Evaluation test shows the Indian students fare poorly.
PISA is conducted by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Secretariat; the survey is based on two-hour test that half a million students are put through.
The Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are among the best performing States in our country. That’s why The Indian government had selected these two to take part in PISA. Meanwhile only few 15-year-olds could respone while others test results were disappointing.
India got the second last position among the 73 nations only beating Kyrgyzstan when tested on their reading, maths and science abilities. China’s Shanghai province, also a first-timer, scored the highest in reading, mathematics and science.
